Tail of Resilience: Skye’s Journey back to Health and Her Person

All4Paws first encountered Skye in June of 2022. Her owner was in need of a free or low cost/spay for his new fur baby and contacted one of our cat volunteers. Skye was an indoor/outdoor cat so it was critical that she was spayed so she would not add any kittens to the Feral/Community cat population in Pawleys Island. The All4Paws volunteer was able trap her and she was taken to the clinic where she was spayed and microchipped. She was then returned to her first owner.

In the Summer of 2024, the same volunteer was assisting with a food donation for Skye and discovered that she had a very serious injury to her tail. The majority of her tail had been degloved. To this day, we are not sure if she was attacked by a wild animal or caught in some sort of a trap. It was evident that Skye needed surgery and possibly amputation for her tail.

Unfortunately for Skye, she did not get the medical attention she so desperately needed in a timely fashion. Our volunteer came across Skye a third time when she was spotted in the driveway of another home down the road from her original home. She was recognized immediately due to the nature of her tail injury.

The volunteer immediately contacted All4Paws, and a time slot was cleared for her to have surgery. She was trapped once again. All4Paws was able to scan her chip and see that she was indeed a cat we had treated two years earlier. The vast majority of her tail was amputated by our vet. Skye stayed with us for rehabilitation in our quarantine for two weeks. It was our hope that we would be able to socialize her and make her an indoor pet. However, it was evident that Skye was not happy and needed to be returned to her indoor/outdoor home. One day after her sutures were removed, she went back to her second home where she happily greeted her human. Life Without a Tail is Still Purr-fect!

Please consider making a donation to the All4Paws Compassion Fund for animals like Skye. Without your support we would not have been able to help Skye on both occasions that she needed us.
