Rescue Dogs for Adoption in South Carolina Who Have Been Waiting Too Long

Some dogs arrive and find a family fast. Others wait. These are their stories, and one of them might be yours.

Every Dog Here Has Been Waiting Over 100 Days

Most people who adopt a dog do it quickly. They see a face, they feel something, and they act. But some dogs get passed over, again and again, for reasons that have nothing to do with who they are.

The rescue dogs on this page have each spent more than 100 days in our care. They have been walked, loved, and looked after by our team. They have learned to trust people all over again. And every single day, they are still waiting for the one thing we cannot give them: a home.

At our Pawleys Island rescue, we believe every dog deserves a second chance. Not almost every dog. Every dog. These are not broken animals. They are patient ones.

Our Adoptable Dogs

Alvin

Adult • Loves dog friends and walks

Personality:

Playful, Quiet, Gentle

Story:

Alvin is a sweet hound who aspires to be a house hound. He loves walks and time in the play yard with dog friends and treats, and is friendly with people too. He can be a little fearful when first approached but is quick to want you to put on his leash and head out for an adventure. He keeps his kennel clean at night and hasn’t been in foster yet.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Alvin is a classic hound in the best and most underappreciated sense. He’s gentle and soulful, but he takes his time trusting new people, and in a shelter setting, that reserve can easily read as disinterest. Hounds also tend to get passed over simply because people walk in with a different dog in mind. But Alvin isn’t waiting for just anyone. He’s waiting for the person who will put on his leash, head out the door, and give him the chance to show who he really is.

Benny

Adult • Affectionate & playful

Personality:

Affectionate, Friendly, Playful

Story:

Benny is a sweet, social German Shepherd mix who is somehow still waiting for his family. He’s affectionate and playful and easy to be around; the kind of dog who settles in and makes himself at home. His size might give some people pause, but for the right person, that’s just more dog to love. Benny doesn’t ask for much. He just asks that you give him a chance.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Benny is another one we can’t quite explain. He’s sweet, social, and easy to be around. Our best guess is that his size gives some people pause, but for anyone willing to look past that, there’s a really good dog waiting on the other side. Benny just needs the right person to stop and notice him.

Simon

Adult • Shy but sweet

Personality:

Quiet, Playful, Friendly

Story:

Simon is a shy guy but super loving and ready for his own family. He enjoys playtime with other dogs, walks, and quiet time in the sun with humans. He may shy away when first meeting someone, but once he knows you’re taking him on an adventure, he’s ready to go. He keeps a clean kennel and should settle in well to a home routine.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Simon is shy at first meeting, and in a busy rescue environment, shy can be invisible. People walk past and he doesn’t do much to call attention to himself. Add to that the fact that hounds aren’t always what people picture when they imagine their next dog, and Simon keeps getting skipped. But the staff knows what’s on the other side of that shyness: a sweet, loving dog who just needs a little time and a little quiet to let his personality come through.

Burke

Young • Knows all his commands

Personality:

Friendly, Playful, Athletic

Story:

Burke is an adolescent pup who knows his basic commands and is a great walking and travel companion. He’s also happy to hang out and nap. He’s grown up in the rescue and has thrived in foster. He can get excited and has learned commands like “place” to manage his puppy enthusiasm. He’s a curious, loving, quick learner ready for his own happy home.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Burke has been at the rescue long enough to let his nerves get the better of him. He can lunge at other dogs in close quarters, which makes him look like a handful in a kennel setting. But here’s what we know: when Burke is away from the stress of the rescue, he is a completely different dog. He’s currently in foster, riding along on errands and playing happily with two other dogs. The rescue environment isn’t showing you the real Burke. His family will.

Aurora

Adult • Great with kids and dogs

Personality:

Affectionate, Playful, Gentle, Quiet

Story:

Aurora is a gentle giant who has been reserved but affectionate since arriving at the rescue. She can be nervous around new people, but with calm, patient trust she’ll walk with you and look through your soul with her kind eyes. She’s been an amazing caretaker for even more skittish pups. It may take time to build her confidence, but the reward is the most loving and dear companion.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Aurora is one of the most misrepresented dogs at the rescue. Her kennel is positioned where she sees a constant stream of strangers, and she reacts by lunging and throwing herself at the run. It’s a lot. But it’s fear, not aggression, and the Aurora on the other side of that gate is a whole different story. She needs a patient adopter who understands that earning her trust takes a little time. The payoff, her team will tell you, is extraordinary.

Walker

Adult • 70 lbs of snuggle

Personality:
Affectionate, Friendly, Playful
Story:

Walker is a big chunk of love always ready for a trip to the park, beach, or any dog-friendly destination. He walks great on a harness and leash, plays well with other big dogs, and isn’t known to chase cats or bother smaller dogs. He’s a couch potato and a great walking companion, knows his basic commands, and will do anything to please his people.

Why They Have Been Overlooked:

Walker is a big, beautiful pit mix who we believe has some degree of vision and hearing impairment. For some people, that combination (the size, the breed, the sensory challenges) gives them pause. But Walker hasn’t gotten that memo. He’s a total baby. He loves to play, lives for his people, and takes life one snuggle at a time. His challenges haven’t dimmed his spirit at all.
